Heading out to the ocean for the first time to saltwater fish can be a fun and exciting experience. Unlike fresh water fishing, the ocean has a lot more to offer in terms of the size and species of the fish. Whether you’re fishing for the first time or it’s your tenth time, there are some things that you’ll need before heading out on a boat.
A Fishing License: All states within the United States are going to require that a fishing license is purchased. Check with the local DNR departments within the state to see what kind of license is required. Read more about that here. Many charters won’t let you board until one is purchased.
Rods and Reels: Unlike fresh water fish, special rods and reels are required due to the size of the fish. Since some of these fish can weigh more than 100 pounds, it’s mandatory that a certain line weight is purchased so that the line doesn’t snap during the reel in.
Fishing Net: Most fish in the saltwater will require a net to bring them in. While fish can be reeled in toward the top of the board, it isn’t recommended due to the amount of pressure and weight the fish can put on the line. Bring along a net that is designed for the saltwater.
These are the three major things to consider when saltwater fishing. If you’re going to head on a charter, check to see what they offer because you may find that all you’ll need is yourself!
